Budget Tips: How To Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck

Living paycheck to paycheck is a harsh reality that many families face in America. It isn’t ideal, but it is REAL. I didn’t want to tackle this post from a holier than thou perspective, because trust me … we’ve been there. So I wanted to share some things we did to stop that dangerous cycle and really start positioning ourselves to build true wealth.

Create a budget

“Create a budget” may seem like a simple statement, but it is the first step in really understanding where your money goes. You can have a general idea of how your money is spent, but until you start combing through your monthly bank statements to see exactly how much is spent in each area of your life, you won’t be able to get ahead. So how do you create a budget? My husband has an amazing podcast episode on this, so I am going to recap a bit of it below but I highly recommend tuning in!

How To Create A Budget:
  1. List out ALL of your monthly expenses.
    • If you aren’t sure where you are spending your money, as I mentioned earlier, use your bank statements as a guide. For my family, the number one thing that works for us is knowing exactly where all of our money is being spent. I was notorious for spending beyond the budget every single month and it wasn’t until my husband and I both got on the same page with where we want to land financially that I realized I needed to change my behavior for our system to work. It also finally dawned on me that if I want to be a multi-millionaire, it isn’t just going to happen, I have to do the work.
  2. Calculate how much money you bring in each month
    • Knowing how much money you bring in each month is equally as important knowing what your monthly expenses are. If you are spending more than you make, you will NEVER get ahead. Ever. One thing I should note also is that we do not factor in side hustle money into our monthly expenses/budget. Our budget is built solely on what we make from our 9-5 jobs, anything extra is just that … extra and we use it on our other investments.
  3. Create a spreadsheet/monthly budget document
    • A budget is essentially a monthly plan and commitment to being responsible with your finances. You don’t need any fancy tools to build this document. We use Google sheets! If you’d like an example of our budget, you can send a request here.
4. Within your budget, create a savings plan
  • Every time we get paid from our 9-5 jobs, we move money around according to our budget. One of the most important moves we make is to our savings accounts. We have a few different accounts. I’ll share below our most used, but of course do what works for you and your family.
    • 6+ Month Emergency Fund Savings – If one of us loses our job, we have our salaries saved and invested in a high yield savings account that generates a % return each month. So even though our money is sitting for a rainy day, it is still making money for us. Please note: this took TIME and PLANNING to save and build this fund. Calculate your income and how long it will realistically take you to save this amount of money. Once you have that information, start saving. Be sure to research where you can get the money for your money.
    • Regular Savings – Just your basic savings account that we keep on hand for miscellaneous needs. We allocate a specific dollar amount per paycheck here.
    • Crypto Savings – We also have money allocated in stable coins within crypto (check out my husband’s podcast if you aren’t sure what that is, it is way too much to dig into on this post!)

Being able to save any amount of money requires discipline. Even if you start out very small, you have to start. It could be $10/day to replace eating out for lunch at work. Or $1000/per month because you noticed you have the ability to save that after working the numbers and planning your finances.

Identify where and how much you can save and get started. It will be a total game changer for your finances. When I went to get work done on my car a couple weeks ago, it cost us over $1500 and because we always save, it wasn’t a big deal. I swiped my debit card and kept it moving. Years ago, that would have thrown us off financially.

I’m thinking about doing a $1000 challenge in an upcoming post where any one interested in participating will commit to saving $1000 in 30 days. More details to come.

Eliminate Debt

Once you’ve created your budget and you are on track to start being more financially responsible, it’s time to tackle debt. We have opted to tackle it head on and completely eliminate it. It’s frustrating. It’s humbling. It’s uncomfortable. But it is so very necessary.

Debt is crippling and will force you to never be able to get ahead. Once you have a handle on how much money you spend each month, you should also have a pretty good understanding of how much of that money is going to debt. Whether it is a car, credit card, student loan, etc … you have to build the payoff plan into your monthly budget. I know that sometimes it is easier to ignore it. Yolo, right?! I used to do the same thing. I’d swipe my credit card, run it up beyond what I could afford and then be stuck. But it was a cycle that I honestly got tired of repeating.

I am debt free as of 1.5 years ago and it is an extremely freeing feeling to not owe anyone any money (except for our houses).

Think about your financial goals and ask yourself if how you are spending your money is in line with them. Are you disciplined and on track? Or are you spending to try and look like you have more money than you actually do? Jason always tells me “we’re broke, you can’t afford that” LOL … it used to deeply offend me because I KNOW that we are far from broke, but his point is that we aren’t where we want to be yet, so don’t let up or get comfortable. I was watching stories the other day and one of my favorite bloggers, Courtney (@greeneyesgoldsoul) said if you aren’t rich, you’re broke! She sounded so much like my husband in that moment, but I knew exactly what she meant. Don’t get caught up in the now and forget to set up a solid financial future.

My dad also once said “the funny thing about debt is the only person that can see it is you.” That stuck with me because it is so true and it reminds me constantly to make sure that I can look myself in the mirror and feel good about the habits I am creating. Looking wealthy vs. actually having wealth – it’s powerful thing to overcome.

Make More Money

For this point, I’m going to direct you to The Six Figure Side Hustle, a post I wrote that discusses the importance of having multiple streams of income. It’s actually beyond important, it is CRITICAL to have multiple income streams in this day and age. Outside of loving my job, it is the reason I laugh when people ask me when I’m going to quit my job and blog full-time … child, NEVER! I’m collecting all my coins, and you should too. And if the day comes when I don’t need to work for the man anymore, I’ll still be working on something else. Make sure you have a read.

Key Takeaways:
  • Have an honest debt to income evaluation with yourself
  • Create a budget that you can stick to
  • Eliminate debt
  • Commit to creating an additional income stream this year

My husband’s podcast is an excellent wealth resource. It is called “The Good Samaritan Podcast” because he truly loves sharing this type of information. Be sure to check it out and have a listen!

Thank you so much for reading today’s wealth post. I added a tab to the menu bar where you can read each week’s post. I hope that you find these helpful! Tell a friend and meet me back here next Wednesday for another discussion.

Top 5 Postpartum Items at Walmart

This post is written in partnership with Walmart.

Top 5 Postpartum Must Haves @Walmart

As a new mama, I am constantly seeking out information and must haves for Zoe. Our sons are 11 and 9, so anything I used all those years ago isn’t always relevant now. I love that I can scroll Instagram, see something that I think will work great for my baby, and then have it within a day or 2 by using the new Walmart+ membership benefit: Walmart+ free shipping, no order minimum (excludes oversized/freight & Marketplace items) with next-day and two-day shipping on items from Walmart.com!

Today on the blog I’m highlighting the Top 5 baby items I’ve ordered for Zoe while using this benefit. Walmart+ is a household essential! We use it multiple times a week.

  • Haakaa Mom Starter Kit – I had the original Haakaa and then I saw this one and knew I needed it. The suction at the bottom and the lid have been so awesome.
  • Lansinoh Breastfeeding Starter Kit – There are so many essentials in this set. We use it daily!
  • Diapers – You can literally never have enough! I can sometimes get these as soon as next day when eligible.
  • Nursing Pads – I use about a box a month of these! They are the best at making sure I don’t leak through my clothes.
  • Nursing bra – I ordered these when I desperately needed more bras. I shared these on Instagram a few weeks ago … they are my absolute favorite nursing bra!

You can check out more details regarding this benefit here!

Postpartum Hair Journey w/Pantene Miracle Rescue

This post is written in partnership with Pantene. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I’m so excited to be teaming up with Pantene again to share more products from their collections that I am using and loving. I was recently introduced to the Pantene Pro-V Miracle Rescue Collection and couldn’t wait to give it a try on my natural hair. As you know, I wear protective styles to protect my natural hair from heat damage and to keep my curls healthy! I am currently wearing a sew-in hairstyle, which has some of my natural hair out on the top of my head. I use the Pantene Miracle Rescue Collection to ensure that in-between trips to the salon I am not causing any damage to my hair. Specifically, heat damage, as I’ve struggled with this in the past. The Miracle Rescue Conditioning Treatment and Intense Rescue Shot even repair signs of damage as well as $60 treatment!

Here’s a quick recap of the products that I like the most. The Pantene Miracle Rescue Collection will be available for purchase in January 2021, and I’m so excited to give you a preview of the collection! Let’s dive in.

pantene miracle resuce
Miracle Rescue Conditioning Treatment –

I use this after I shampoo my hair, and honestly sometimes by itself without shampooing. This conditioner does a great job of deep conditioning my hair and keeping it very moisturized. It’s a key part in my wash day routine when I wash my hair at home. It has a blend of deeply-absorbing Pro-V Nutrients, including Pro-Vitamin B5, strengthening lipids, and protective antioxidants. Apply to wet hair in the shower – start at the tips and work through your hair towards the roots. Leave on for 1-3 minutes and then rinse.

Miracle Rescue Multitasking 10 in 1 Spray –

I love a good spray! I use this one on my damp hair. The mix of hydrators offers 10 benefits, including breakage prevention, heat protection and detangling, in a lightweight formula. Spray in damp hair after your daily shower routine. Apply from mid-lengths to ends for extra moisture and strength against breakage.

Miracle Rescue Moisture Mix-In –

One word: Avocado oil! There are so many great benefits when using avocado oil on your hair and I love that this product is rich with it.  Talk about moisture! Combine 1-5 pumps of this product with your favorite Pantene conditioner, mix together and massage from mid-lengths to ends.

Miracle Rescue Intense Rescue Shot –

This product is ideal for hair that’s gone through extreme damage from coloring or heat-styling. Use weekly in place of your conditioner. It transforms dry hair to become visibly healthier, shinier and stronger against damage.

I can’t wait for you to try the Pantene Miracle Rescue Collection in January 2021! Let me know when you do! I know you will love it.

The Six Figure Side Hustle

I’m going to start this post out with an admission of a huge mistake I made while on maternity leave from work. I started my leave at the beginning of November and completed all of my paperwork to set up direct deposit while I am out. The first week I didn’t get paid, I chalked it up to the lapse in pay that HR warned me about and didn’t think anything of it. Then another week went by. And then another one. This is when my husband was starting to look at me crazy LOL! He said to me … “you realize you haven’t been paid in weeks, right?”

I honestly hadn’t noticed or felt the gravity of it because our other money streams were still flowing. In fact, we cashed $40,000 in blog checks in the month of November alone. After calling to check on things, I realized that I made an error with my account number which caused a mess up with my direct deposit. Big Oops!

I couldn’t help but think how, in any normal scenario, not getting paid could really affect some families … especially given our current climate. It reminded me of our early days in marriage when we were just getting by and how awful that would have been for us. So today I want to break down the side hustle and the importance of having multiple streams of income to not only accelerate building wealth, but to help you out on a rainy day.

The Six Figure Side Hustle

  1. How to create it
  2. How to grow it
  3. How to make money while you sleep

Number 3 is my personal favorite, the make money while you sleep part. Why? Because unless you plan to work the rest of your life, there has to be an endgame. But let’s dive into the first two points first.

1. How To Create a Side Hustle

Take an inventory of your talents/passions and how you can contribute to or solve a problem within your network and build the plan. My blog grew from my background in journalism and my passion for fashion writing and styling. I dreamed of being a fashion writer for Vogue. But life happened before I took flight. I got married. Had my first child at 21. I was grounded and could barely keep up with my life, much less dig into my passions. However, once my boys were a little older and I felt I could start again, I launched my blog. First as a passion project and eventually it evolved into a business. But the most important thing to take from this is to GET STARTED. Start scared. Start inexperienced. Just start! I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned on the fly over the years. If fake it til you make it was a person … she is me, I am her! A lot of times what keeps people from taking flight with their ideas is this idea that they can start “tomorrow,” or the feeling of insignificance and fear of other peoples opinions. “What if I fail?” “What if my idea isn’t as good as someone else’s idea?” But I’m telling you … you have to start.

2. How To Grow Your Side Hustle

Growth begins with planning, execution and consistency. I started my blog for fun, but quickly realized by year two that other influencers were making some serious money and I knew I could do it too. I analyzed the market and learned from other creators what I needed to do to really elevate myself and my brand to be of a caliber that could demand the kind of money that I knew could be made.

Here’s what I discovered –
  • I needed to elevate my content, so I hired a photographer who understood my vision, respected my budget (because this is a business and I can’t spend more than I can afford), and who could deliver images timely.
  • I needed to be consistent with both my blog posting and my social media presence. To do this, I created a weekly plan and agenda to follow and hold myself accountable to. I use Planoly to plan out social media posts and the notes app on my phone + Asana to plan out blog content.
  • I needed to have a vision + goals to keep me going. When I post consistently and share my best work, my income reflects that, so every plan that I create is intentional. It serves a purpose. It meets the needs of my audience AND the brands I desire to work with.
  • Financially, I have quarterly goals and I also break down my monthly income goals within that. If I’m not on track to meet a goal, I push and pitch until we are. I use Google sheets to map out where I want to land each month. I have been tracking my growth since 2016 and every year I push myself to go higher. In 2016 I made $11,000 for the whole year. Today I bring in well over 6 figures. There’s a lot of intentional planning and execution that goes into every month and I believe this can be applied to all scenarios, not just within the influencer space.
3. How to make money while you sleep

I mentioned earlier this is my favorite part of the side hustle … here’s why. My husband and I bring in a significant income, but we don’t spend it on material things like cars, big houses or jewelry (or whatever it is people spend money on these days). Nearly everything we make from the blog or other investments is invested into income generating assets. Our money, makes money. For example, if I sign a $40,000 deal with a brand, once that check clears, it’s either used to acquire a new income generating asset or pay off a current asset. In doing so, it takes our money further and I’m making money on that $40K long after the check clears.

Now … don’t get me wrong, I buy a handbag every now and then, but I handle business first, always.

So what’s your big idea or side hustle? If you’ve already started it, think about how you can elevate and take your business to the next level – whether it’s the time you’re spending on it or the quality of service you are providing. Invest in yourself – you have to spend money to make money. And stay the course, success won’t happen overnight in most cases, so keep going!

I hope you found this helpful and I can’t wait to dig into more topics when we return to the blog on January 11th! You can follow along with all of our Wednesday Wealth Chat posts by searching on the blog + I’ll be adding a wealth section soon. Here’s last weeks post about how we paid off one of our properties in 3 years!

How We Paid Off A House in 3 Years

We did a thing a few weeks ago … we submitted the final mortgage payment on 1 of 3 homes that we own. It was such an incredible feeling to accomplish something that I used to think would take the life of the loan to pay off. To bring you up to speed if you are new here, we own 3 properties, 2 of them we use as rentals and the other is our primary residence. We started buying rental properties at the end of 2017 when we sold our home in Houston and moved back to Dallas, TX.

In order to prepare our finances for purchasing rentals and be able to have proper debt to income ratio, we rented for 2 years while saving to purchase our first investment properties. I should note that this was easily the most humbling experience of my life to go from living in a gorgeous home in a beautiful neighborhood to a less than glamorous 2 bedroom/2 bath apartment.

Everyone around me appeared to be thriving – buying big homes and getting new luxury cars, and while I knew that I had a good job with a great salary, I didn’t have anything material to show for it. This period of time really taught me a lot about myself and was much needed in learning how to disconnect wealth from “having things.”

I should note that we do not consider ourselves “wealthy” … (yet!) and we do not come from wealth, but we are working really hard to build a life that creates generational wealth for our family. We are currently on the road to our first million dollars in net worth and each time we pay off an asset we get closer and closer!

So how did we pay off one of our homes in 3 years? And is this something you can do too? Let’s dive in.

First off, to answer the latter question … yes, you can totally do it too. There is no magic to this really; it is all about discipline and planning. I admittedly struggle with seeing the long term goal when everyone and everything around me is conditioned to spend, spend, spend. I am so grateful for my husband’s financial savviness and clear vision, because accomplishing our goals definitely wasn’t driven by me initially.

5 Things We Did To Pay Off Our Home in 3 Years:

1. We Got Serious About Personal Financial Education and Literacy.

We (well mainly my husband but I’m getting there) is a glutton for information, especially when it comes to money. Once we started learning more about lending and mortgages you really start to understand why banks want to loan you so much money over a long period of time. Guess what?! It’s not because they like you lol.  Learn what is the best financial outcome for you in a transaction, not what the lender is selling you.  What amount of interest will you pay over the life of a loan? What is the amortization schedule of the loan? How much am I willing to pay with my long term financial goal in mind vs. how much can I afford?

2. We set very clear goals for our finances to set up where we want to be financially.

Where do you want to be in 10 – 30 years? Debt Free? Mortgage Free? Financially Free? Get rid of your 9-5? Be A Millionaire? Be a Billionaire? We decided we wanted to build our net worth to be in the 1% of households for our age group throughout our life. This is a moving target and keeps us motivated.  This lead to us tracking our net worth on a bi-weekly basis (well, I should say my husband tracks this weekly and then we recap).  Being focused on increasing our net worth has lead to more engagement with retirement accounts, stock investments, real estate investments, and now my husband invests in cryptocurrency.  Setting your goal has to work for you. We are very ambitious and competitive people. We shoot for the moon, so our investing strategy fits our goal. You may simply want to pay off your house and retire comfortably in a way that maintains your current lifestyle, this type of goal setting would yield a different approach. Once you set a goal then you can begin making plans for action.

3. We created a budget

Where your money goes is very telling about how serious you are about your financial goals.  If you don’t have a budget, you don’t have a roadmap to become wealthy. Wealth doesn’t just happen by chance as research from Everyday Millionaires by Chris Hogan shows “79% of Millionaires received 0 inheritance “….and most millionaires are 1st generation rich.” This shows, yes, you too can become a millionaire if you’re willing to work hard, make sacrifices, and live on a plan.  Creating a budget is where this plan starts, like setting a ceiling for the amount of monthly income being contributed to housing, food, recreation, trips, shopping, etc. (notice no car loans we don’t believe in those here lol). Once your necessities are accounted for the money remaining is where it gets exciting. This disposable income can help accelerate debt pay off, invest in stock market, invest in real estate market, or become seed money for starting a business.  If you don’t have a meaningful amount of money left over in your mind, that’s where we need to have a heart to heart with the decisions we are making about housing, food, entertainment etc. If you can learn to sacrifice now to live better in the future then you have officially jumped the first hurdle that holds most people from achieving real wealth.  If you can do that, you can reach places you could have only dreamed of before.

4. We Live Below Our Means

The old adage of “keeping up with Joneses” is keeping you broke.  This is the honest truth and the reality is the 1% of net worth households are approaching life in an unconventional manner.  It doesn’t matter how much you make if you spend 110% of what you earn. This is a common affliction for American household as we regularly leverage credit to purchase goods when don’t have the income to support our lifestyle.  You can’t get out of any debt (like a mortgage) unless you are accelerating the payments against that debt. You can only do this if you have the disposable income to do so.  You create this disposable income by being willing to live in a more modest home, drive a more modest car, cook more at home, shop for deals when it comes to vacations, and finding savings anywhere you can to free up more cash to chase your financial goals.  I finally paid off my car last summer and didn’t realize what I was missing out on. Meanwhile my husband hasn’t had a car payment in over 4 years. This is now the norm for us, not the exception.  Be strong enough in your own mental fortitude to say no when everything and everyone around you is big balling and living on the edge financially. It looks good on the outside but seeing a positive 6 or 7 figure net worth  will outweigh any luxury you could’ve had in the past.

5. We Invest!

Invest in your education, time, money, and buy assets.  My husband and I bought rental properties and those rental properties generate income. That income was then used to pay down debt as well as make other investments.  ‘The Richest Man in Babylon’ by George Clason sums up this idea with the second law of gold. “Gold laboreth diligently and contentedly for the wise owner who finds for it profitable employment, multiplying even as the flocks of the field.”  In short, use money to make money, and then let that money make money etc. The art of the side hustle really provided a faster timeline for us to pay off our rental property as I was able to generate additional income from by blogging and social media activity. I will get into that on the next wealth post but I hope this helps get your wheels spinning!

Until next week!

I am SO excited about this series! I hope that you all will follow along and I can’t wait to see where it takes us into the new year. Thank you so much for reading and stay tuned for next week’s post about the importance of a side hustle and how to use that income to your benefit!

3 Weeks Postpartum Update

3 weeks postpartum, 3 weeks with a newborn, 3 weeks of no sleep and constant baby snuggles … it’s been a crazy, wild 3 weeks but I couldn’t let any more time pass by without diving into all that has been going on over here in the Jackson house.

I think the easiest thing to do is to break it down by week as best as I can remember and answer all of your questions! So, let’s dive in!

Postpartum: Leaving the hospital after 24 hours

We were given the option to leave the hospital early (24 hours after delivery). When the idea was first proposed, I wasn’t sure I wanted to do it. I had just seen a blogger friend pass away days after being discharged and I was terrified that something might be overlooked. But at the same time, with it being election day and tension being high, I wasn’t sure I wanted to be in the hospital either.

My recovery was going really well and my nurses/doctor were extremely attentive to how I was doing after delivery. My uterus was hardening and moving back into place the way that it should, my swelling was minimal and I wasn’t having any complications in any other area, so I talked to my doctor about it and ultimately determined that the risks of complications were very low, so we left!

I know there were questions about what I asked and how I felt comfortable to leave so soon, so I’ll touch on that briefly!

What questions did you ask?

I wanted to understand the risks, what to look for (bleeding, hemorrhaging, swelling, etc.) and what to do if I feel like something is off. I’m obviously not a doctor, so I’d say if you have specific questions, start with a medical professional. I asked my nurses to show me how to check my uterus to ensure that it was continuing to harden the way that it should. I also had very open conversations with my doctor and nurse team about my fears regarding being a woman of color and the high mortality rate amongst our community during and after childbirth. I was actually really pleased with how much everyone acknowledged this and even before I shared my concerns, I felt like my nurse staff was going above and beyond for me to make sure I was safe and healing appropriately.

I think if I was in a situation where I didn’t feel like I was being listened to or where my concerns were being brushed off, I wouldn’t have been so at ease, but I was really happy with my care and it helped in making that decision.

Week 1

Leaving the hospital is always a mixture of excitement and nerves. Even with baby #3, that feeling doesn’t go away. Our first week home is a blur. We barely slept, which is to be expected, but I was also in the thick of my postpartum recovery. Many of you have asked “what was it like?” and how did I care for myself (products, etc.):

Postpartum Care – Vaginal Recovery

I had a vaginal birth with no epidural, so right after delivery I felt everything that was going on down there. Extra large maxi pads, peri bottle, ice packs, witch hazel pads and Dermaplast spray was my hourly routine while I was in the hospital. Everything felt on fire down there, so this brought a lot of relief during that first 24 hours. I know a lot of people use these products once they get home too, but honestly for me, within 24 hours I’m okay with just a pad and my peri bottle.

I didn’t remember how much labor takes out of your until we got home and life started moving very slow. I napped as much as I could and really didn’t get dressed beyond a robe until week 2.

My milk came in almost immediately after getting home, which felt like such a blessing, so I was nursing Zoe every 2 hours. At first, I didn’t want to use a bottle until she was 2 weeks old, but we had a few bad latches that really destroyed my chest and I had to pump. It was too painful to breastfeed until my nipples fully healed. I met with a lactation consultant while in the hospital a few times, and she helped me with techniques to help Zoe open her mouth nice a wide. We still had some issues once we got home, but thankfully now (week 3) we’ve figured each other out a little better and are having much better days!

Week 2

Week 2 looked a lot like Week 1. I started to get more of my energy back and even got dressed a couple times. My bleeding was still going strong, so I continued with wearing Depends and using my peri bottle. Zoe is still getting up every 2-3 hours, so my pump schedule mirrors that as well.

My Elvie pumps arrived this week, so I started using both my Motif Luna pump and the portable, wear in your bra pumps. I ordered more nursing bras, because I realized very quickly that I needed to have a lot of these on hand.

Week 3

Week 3 has been good for my soul. Early on, I wasn’t sure if I’d ever feel like myself again but I am so glad that I do now. Getting dressed, doing my makeup and getting out of the house are things that I enjoy doing. I try to do at least one of these things 2-3 times a week. It makes such a difference on my mental health when I prioritize myself.

I used to worry about the age gap with my kids, but honestly, it is the best thing about having a newborn right now. They help with everything and are eager to do so.

My bleeding has stopped this week, but I still have occasional discharge, especially when I wear my belly band, so I still wear Depends. Peri bottle isn’t necessary, but I have them by the toilet just in case.

Here is the belly band I wear. I only wear it an hour a day, about 2-3 days a week. My kids wear them more than me right now haha! They think it will give them a 6-pack (insert eye roll LOL). I honestly didn’t feel comfortable enough on my stomach to wear this band until week 3. I tried it week 1-2 and it was too much, I was still healing.

Postpartum Feeding: Breastfeeding vs. Pumping

Right now I am pumping 95% of the time. I’ve been asked about my decision to pump vs. nurse a few times, so I thought I’d share. I love being able to use all of the help in our house. Our kids are older and are so so excited to help with their baby sister, and my husband wants to help too. Having bottles ready allows me the flexibility to take a shower, leave the house, do things that make me feel like “me” so that I don’t lose myself in motherhood/newborn life.

Breast pumps: Elvie + Motif Luna

Elvie

Pros

  • Convenience – unbeatable!
  • Fits into your bra – will be bulky, but that’s okay for me.
  • Switches up the suctions, frequency and mode to simulate how an infant would feed (I do this manually with my other pump)
  • Keeps track of when you pumped

Cons

  • Data does not always report correctly in the app – it’s a little annoying to have to adjust the ounces each time. It is incorrect for me more than it is correct.
  • Suction is not great at times – I have to pause, readjust and then resume. Make sure you have a great bra, with lots of stretch (but still will hold the pumps close to your chest – I use this one).
  • Need to still use my regular pump at least 1-2 times per day to avoid getting backed up with milk

Motif Luna

Pros

  • Great suction
  • Empties me out
  • Chargeable base so you can be mobile

Cons

  • Must wear pumping bra (even with bra, pumps stick out)
  • Cords that get in the way

Overall, I love both of my pumps. I will say that I could not see myself owning one without the other. I need the flexibility of the Elvie, but acknowledge that it’s not always enough to get all of my milk out at times (not always). Having my Motif readily available has helped keep my milk flowing and ensure I prevent clogged milked ducts as much as possible. I will say that if you are able to get a great suction or if you have time to pump longer to empty out, the Elvie would likely be a good choice for you by itself. I try to keep my pump sessions to 15 minutes.

I should also note, I keep a Hakaa in our diaper bag, just in case we are out and I need to release some milk real quick in the car or something. It has come in handy multiple times so far! I’m so glad I have it.

Postpartum Supplements + Diet

I am still taking my prenatal vitamins, per recommendation of my doctor. I also take Natal Nourish by Organic Olivia, which I used during my entire pregnancy as well. I have started to incorporate collagen more into my diet, although I have been bad about making my smoothies as of late.

My diet continues to be just eating healthy, balanced meals as often as possible. It helps that we don’t keep snacks in the house right now, so if I get the munchies, there’s really only mixed nuts, oatmeal or fruit for me to snack on (really boring, but it helps). I definitely allow myself to indulge when I feel like it, but in the back of my mind I try to remind myself, I’ll eventually want to get back in shape and need to start changing my eating habits. I completely indulged during pregnancy … salads … we didn’t know her LOL

Postpartum Weight-loss

So far I’ve lost nearly all of my baby weight. I attribute this 100% to breastfeeding, drinking lots of water and losing water weight. The number on the scale doesn’t mean much to me, so I try not to stress on that or talk about it much on here. It’s not healthy. I do have fitness goals and I know what I need to do diet and exercise wise to get back to “fit me” … but I’m taking my time. I intermittent fast and follow a great workout program, but to be honest, I’m not ready to care about any of that right now. In due time, for sure!

Thank you for reading!

I hope that covers everything! I’ll do another check-in at 6 weeks postpartum. Overall, things are going really well. I feel good, I’m getting sleep when I can and my body is healing. The best thing I’ve done for myself this postpartum is REST. It’s hard, but I’ve tried to prioritize it and speak up when I feel overwhelmed or like I’m not getting enough support for the men in my house (they are awesome but sometimes I have to let them know that I need more help).

I know so many of you have little ones on the way! Congratulations! My best advice is to always advocate for yourself, speak up if something doesn’t feel right and once baby is here … ENJOY THE MOMENT! It all goes by so fast.

Holiday Shopping at Walmart

I’m teaming up with Walmart today to share the best gifts for the whole family.

I used the gift finder on walmart.com to identify the perfect gifts for everyone in my life. The tool is so cool; you can search by gender, price point and even shipping/delivery speed.

This year the men in my house are all about electronics. My sons want a Nintendo switch, and my husband has his heart set on a PS5! I linked their favorites plus a few others that your tech lovers will be so excited to get.

Even though we’re not doing a ton of toys this year for the kids, I did want to pull together a few toys for every age group. I can’t wait for Zoe to start playing with toys! It brings back so many memories looking at the Walmart toy catalog. When I was little, my sisters and I used to always flip through toy catalogs to find what we wanted to wish for for Christmas.

Sporting Goods:

The last thing on my shopping list is sporting goods! My sons love sports, so I was able to find several great options for them this holiday season using the Walmart gift finder. They got an early Christmas gift with their new basketball goal which we set up a couple of months ago, but here’s a look at a few other things I have my eye on:

I hope that you find everything you’re looking for this holiday season! Walmart is my favorite gifting destinations because they have a little bit of everything for everyone in my life. You can shop your gifting needs throughout this post!

Cozy Chic Holiday Outfit Ideas

The holidays may look different this year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t look fabulous while staying safe at home. I am so very excited about the new Gibson Look X Glam holiday collection. You may have seen the hype on social media, and I’m here to tell you, it’s everything you’ve heard and more! I had the opportunity to launch another wrap dress with the brand and it is a stunner. Today on the blog, I want to introduce you to the collection, share a discount code with you and invite you to shop pieces that you will love to wear all season long.

The Steph Wrap Dress

I LOVE a good wrap dress. It looks so good on every body type and it an absolute must have for your closet. The fact that this dress fit me so well at 41 weeks pregnant should be evidence enough that any and every body can rock this look! Use code STEPH20 to save 20% on your purchase of any items from the collection.

Gibson Look X Glam Collection 2020

There’s a little something for everything this year, including pajamas that you are going to love. I actually wore my pajamas to the hospital when it was time to deliver Zoe! In addition to cozy pjs, you’ll find great pieces to dress up or dress down, no matter what your holiday plans are! So, let’s take a look!

Joggers + Leggings

The best bottom combo during the holidays is joggers and leggings. All the yummy food pairs well with flattering bottoms. The velvet and satin joggers are probably my favorite addition to the Glam collection this year, and the velvet leggings are a staple that I wear time and time again this time of year.

Dresses + Sweaters

There are a few dresses in the collection, just in case you do decide to dress up a bit more while staying home or going out! In addition to the Steph Wrap Dress, check out this Sparkle Knit Dress. It is super soft and the sparkle is subtle but beautiful. This Mock Neck Knit Dress is so chic and can be worn for both holiday and just every day chic style. I always pair it with this duster.

You may also remember this fun sweater from last season’s glam launch! It’s so great for dressing up or dressing down. I paired it with this velvet dress and it looked so so cute!

Must Have Tops

Here are all of the blouses and sweaters from the collection as well! I love Natasha’s sequin off the shoulder top. That green is STUNNING! Which is your favorite?

See below for some FAQ and sizing information! I hope that you love the collection as much as we loved creating it! Remember to use code STEPH20 to save 20% when shopping on Gibsonlook.com.

Gifts for Beauty Lovers 2020

Holiday 2020 is well underway! Gift guides are popping up everywhere and shopping has commenced. This year, I am so excited to bring back #STJholiday, a full holiday shopping and resource guide right here on stephtaylorjackson.com. Today we are kicking things off with Nordstrom! I’ve always shopped Nordstrom fashion, however, today, I wanted to share some great beauty finds that the beauty lover in your life is sure to love.

Whether your shopping for makeup or self care essentials, I found so many great options on Nordstrom’s website. I personally love makeup and have so much fun trying out gift sets this time of year. You can usually try products at a discounted price when they are included in a gift set. It’s a great way to introduce new products into your beauty routine before buying the full-size.

Let’s dive right in! Here is what I’m loving in beauty on Nordstrom:

There’s a little something at every price point! My favorite gift to give is the silk pillow case and/or the eye mask. I used that Slip eye mask during my hospital stay with Zoe and really enjoyed it. They are gifts that people always think about as “nice to have” items, but often never pull the trigger and purchase. It also helps that they are so affordable.

Another item that is a favorite for me to gift is the Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk gift set. This lip color looks so amazing on every skin shade. It’s universal and beautiful. The beauty lover in your life will surely thank you!

For hair, you can’t go wrong with T3! I gifted my sister a T3 blow dryer one year and she told me it is the best hair dryer she’s ever owned! I linked some other hair tools that I use daily and that I know will be a hit with gifting!

Steph's Go-To Gifts

I’m so excited that the holiday season is here! Stay tuned for even more holiday guides and content from Nordstrom. Thank you for reading!
